Apple’s CEO on Tablet-Laptop Hybrids — Really?

Microsoft’s coming Windows 8 operating system is focusing attention on the possibility of tablet-laptop hybrids. This week, Apple CEO Tim Cook responded to that idea in so many words, amounting to the equivalent of “Really?” Cook told a conference call of analysts that “anything can be forced to converge, but the problem is that the products are about tradeoffs.” With a hybrid, he said, “you begin to make tradeoffs to the point where what you have left at the end of the day doesn’t please anyone.” ‘A Toaster and a Refrigerator’ He noted that one could “converge a toaster and a refrigerator,” but that probably wouldn’t satisfy fans of either appliance. In response, Microsoft Corporate Vice President Frank X. Shaw tweeted that the reported comment “must be a typo,” because the comparison shouldn’t be to a toaster/fridge, but to a toaster/oven. “Those seem pretty popular,” he wrote. Cook said that some companies might choose to try out hybrids, in which they will end up compromising for both and not pleasing users of either device. He added that his company, which turned the tablet category into what is arguably the hottest form factor for personal computing, is “not going to that party.” That party has already started. Earlier this month, Intel showed a product it is calling the Lexeco, which is a Windows tablet that has a kickstand and a keyboard to turn it into an Ultrabook laptop. Intel CEO Paul Otellini and other executives have been talking about hybrids for months, where the tablet is “consumption” mode and the laptop is “productivity” mode. In January, Lenovo showed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) its Windows 8-based IdeaPad Yoga prototype, in which a laptop’s screen can fold down and turn the device into a tablet. Asus has offered an Android tablet with optional keyboard dock for a year,… Continue reading Apple’s CEO on Tablet-Laptop Hybrids — Really? →

Sprint Commits to iPhone Unlimited Data Plan

With Apple’s iPhone drawing new customers to the third-largest carrier, Sprint Nextel is committed to a key differentiator in the market: unlimited data. The data-hungry iPhone, with nearly a half-million available apps, is likely a key reason AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless have phased out unlimited data plans for new customers in favor of metered plans. Sprint, which gained the iPhone with the introduction of the 4S last October, is the only iPhone carrier to offer so-called “all-you-can-eat” data. Match Made in Heaven And that’s not likely to change any time soon. The company announced that it expects to keep unlimited data plans even if the next iPhone model is equipped for long-term evolution 4G high-speed data, as is widely expected. “I’m not anticipating the unlimited plan would change by that point,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse told CNET. “That’s our distinctive differentiator. Frankly, [the iPhone and unlimited plans are] a marriage made in heaven. We’re clearly attracting customers from our competitors.” Sprint sold 1.5 million iPhones in the first quarter, the company reported this week, which is far less than the 4.3 million sold by AT&T and 3.2 million sold by Verizon Wireless; but 44 percent of Sprint’s iPhone sales were to new customers. Overall the carrier added 1.1 million newcomers, for a net gain of 263,000. Phones using LTE do not necessarily consume more data than 3G phones, but users are likely to download more and to download content such as HD video, which could eat away at data allowances. “LTE phones encourage people to use more data because the network’s high bandwidth and low latency delivers a better consumer experience,” wireless expert Alex Spektor of Strategy Analytics told us Wednesday. AT&T and Verizon customers who signed up for unlimited data plans before the change can still use them, but newer customers choose from plans starting from… Continue reading Sprint Commits to iPhone Unlimited Data Plan →

Facebook’s Spending Spree May Have Delayed IPO

Facebook appears ready to delay its initial public offering. CNBC first reported that the social media giant was pondering moving the big event to June. Facebook representatives could not immediately be reached for comment about the status of its IPO. The company was expected to begin its IPO road show in two weeks in anticipation of a May public offering, according to news reports. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been busy spending cash, though, and that may be spurring delays. Facebook just snapped up Instagram, a popular photo app. And the company also spent $550 million on patents from Microsoft in a move to beef up its IP protection in the lawsuits with Yahoo and any other attacks patent trolls may launch against it once it collects what could be a $100 billion IPO. Social Media Ups and Downs In November, Groupon posted the largest initial public offering since Google by raising $700 million. Then, in December, Zynga one-upped the social couponing site with an IPO of its own by raising $1 billion in its IPO. Zynga then boasted the biggest IPO since Google raised $1.9 billion in 2004. Facebook could dwarf them all when it goes public. Many industry watchers expect Facebook’s valuation to range between $75 billion and $100 billion. Facebook wants to raise up to $10 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. Facebook posted a $1 billion profit in 2011 on $3.71 billion in revenues. Beyond the recent acquisitions, Facebook is also under heavy government scrutiny. Every two years for the next 20 years, Facebook is required to have independent, third-party audits certifying that it has a privacy program in place that meets or exceeds the requirements of a Federal Trade Commission order, and to ensure that the privacy of consumers’ information is protected. Facebook’s Rare Moves We caught up with Jake Wengroff, global… Continue reading Facebook’s Spending Spree May Have Delayed IPO →
